Interview Magazine got it spot on when they chose to feature Carey Mulligan on their May cover. Shot by Mikael Jansson and styled by Karl Templar, the starlet plays homage to Edie Sedgwick with the cropped hair, black and white photos and simple silhouettes. Shot beautifully, the spread could have been compromised by the neon paint splatters, but for whatever reason, they work beautifully over top the faded, grainy images.

I’m always drawn to designs, images and photos that use layering techniques and transparencies, and this specific example reminds me of what I started playing around with when I featured the Ruby collection awhile back, using sheer paintbrush strokes to add colour and interest to the look book. I love the splatter-like effect of the colour here, how it adds an almost punk-like element to a set of otherwise very feminine photos.

The Bicyclette website is in development right now (exciting!), so I’m starting to work on some imagery for that, and I think it’s elements such as these that I’m going to try to integrate. And faded black and white, of course. Always a favourite.

There are some girls who are girl-crush worthy, and Zooey Deschanel easily falls in to this category for me. I think it’s a mix between her quirky character, impeccable retro-infused style and overall unique gorgeousness. Yes, that would be a crush.

Two of my favourite editorial shoots with her were from Nylon, October ’08 issue and Jane, July 2007.

There’s a certain quality about her that makes it difficult to place her in a certain era, as she could easily pass as a vintage pinup. Some other photos of her I adore, found in various places:

I’ve chosen to forgo any crazy party plans for tonight’s celebrations and instead stay in and have a quiet night with family. I must say, I’m sad to miss the opportunity to dress up and celebrate with friends, but I think this year calls for a more relaxed welcome, and I’m looking forward to that. There will be other nights for festivities, no doubt …

I’m still putting together my list of New Years Resolutions, and am looking forward to having a list of goals for myself. So far, most of them revolve around bicyclette and starting the business, which makes sense, seeing as 2010 promises to be a busy and exciting year for me.

I’ll share more details and some future plans and ideas as they surface, and would love feedback and input along the way, as per usual. But for now, I wish you a Happy New Year, and I’ll see you in 2010!

So I’ve been a little absent over these past few days, which I blame schoolwork for. I’ve been glued to my computer, yes, but focused on writing a literature review for my thesis/capstone and writing my second business plan version, for Saturday submission. It’s at the point now where I just have to plug away at everything and get one project done at a time. I’m so close.

Though it has been amazingly time consuming and a lot of hard work, I’ve somewhat enjoyed the process of writing this paper. The topics I’m covering in it are social media and networking, online consumer behaviour and retail conception and development, and it’s a nice change to feel as though all of the hard work I’m putting in to it actually has some real world applicability. That being said, I still can’t wait for a break from everything.

I know I’ve missed a few posts, but I’ll catch up on them over the next couple of days. Though they may not occur on their designated days, at least you’ll still get to enjoy them!

But today, on schedule, I’m focusing on another style icon!

thursday

This week’s focus is on someone a little more current than last’s: Erin Wasson, model/ fashionista/ designer, etc. She exudes a confidence and inimitable ease of style that makes you unsure whether to love her or hate her. Keeping to a simple palette of neutrals (I was hard pressed to find an outfit that includes colour, and you’ll notice that all of the photos below are black and white), she expertly mixes textures and incorporates basics into her wardrobe so that it appears simple, but never boring. With Erin, it’s all in the details: lace, feathers, sequins, and accessories all lend themselves to her impeccable style. We all know how much I love my feminine pieces mixed with harder edged details, and she managed to pull this off with perfection.

Yes, style crush confirmed.

It’s my very first style icon post, as I missed last weeks…

thursday

Edie Sedgwick has made her way into my heart for two reasons:

1. I am continually drawn to glamorous, tragic characters, and after reading one of Edie’s biographies, it was apparent that she was one such woman. There’s something that I find fascinating about these women who lead such amazing celebrity lifestyles, and yet are also sucked in by the temptation of drugs, alcohol, men, and other potentially harmful addictions. Edie, as Andy Warhol’s muse and a model and actress of the times, was swept up in to this world of fame and fortune in a whirlwind, and left such an impression after such a short amount of time.

2. Edie has such an iconic look, head to toe. The hair, the eyes, the shift dresses and tunics over tights, the oversized earrings, the fur… there are certain items that just scream “Edie!”, even now. Beyond simply what she was wearing, it’s also how she wore it. With personality and spunk and a devil-may-care attitude.

If fashion acts as a visual cue to communicate ideas and portray aspects of our personality; music, as the soundtrack to our lives, is an equally important ingredient in creating an environment and communicating a feeling. I am by no means a music buff, and though I love being introduced to new music and exposed to new genres and artists, I often need someone to guide me and point me along the right path. Which is why I am so lucky to have the boy, who, as a self-taught, self-proclaimed music aficionado and someone who has DJ’d, played, and written about music, is my personal music tour guide.

The Raveonettes, a Danish duo, are one such band that I’ve been introduced to and fallen in love with. Their latest album, In And Out Of Control, which officially comes out tomorrow but has been leaked on the internet for a while now, has been on my repeat ever since. The album has a bright, almost poppy sound to it, but the lyrics deal with darker material, creating a juxtaposition that is infectious, and seems appropriate for the changing of seasons. It’s the kind of music that you can play from start to finish, almost as one continuous track, but almost every song also stands alone as a single. But I’m not a music critic, so I recommend taking a listen tomorrow and enjoying it for yourself.

The Raveonettes- In And Out Of Control

Beyond their addiction-inducing sound and lyrics, The Raveonettes have impeccable, retro-inspired style, and Sharin Foo is undeniably and almost eerily gorgeous, with her blunt blond bob and captivating eyes. Girl crush.

So the reason this post came about in the first place was because the boy and I journeyed up to College St. today, and between errands, wandered into Soundscapes, where he bought us tickets for the upcoming Raveonettes show, October 22 at Phoenix Concert Theatre. It will be my first time seeing them, and my first concert in awhile, so needless to say, I’m excited about the night out. Plus, it gives me an excuse to continue to listen to the album on repeat, so that I have the album memorized and can sing along obnoxiously with every single song. Yes, I am that girl.

Me, in 3D

This photo was done as a nod to the The Raveonettes’ last album, Lust Lust Lust, for which the album cover was rendered in 3D. Plus, it gave me an excuse to fiddle around in Photoshop. So grab your 3D glasses and check out the eye-popping effects!
