We love our sparkle here at Bicyclette, so we decided to top up our jewellery and accessories with some new pieces as we wait for our SS12 deliveries. Lots of glittery goodness and bright colours, with so much styling potential. The perfect way to get creative with your current wardrobe and add a little flair.

A Bicyclette Gift Card, any amount. We just received the official cards, and they're ready to be loaded
Those of you who visit the shop on a regular basis (or follow the blog) know that displays are constantly being reworked and the decor is always evolving. This aspect of having a store has always been one of my favourite parts, and I love that it is always an ongoing project, based on current inspirations, changes in seasons, the evolution of the brand, or a random spark of creativity. And I absolutely wouldn’t have it any other way. So yesterday I fought the Sunday morning urge to sleep in and met my dad (aka The Bicyclette Handyman) at the shop to tackle a few mini projects: switching a few shelves, mounting my bike (wrapped in glitter ribbon, of course) from the ceiling, and putting up a swing (inspired by this).
After we left the shop, my dad and I had a bit of a brainstorming session, and one of the items we touched on was what Bicyclette stands for as a brand. I reiterated what I’ve always believed it to be:
“… an independent retailer that offers a finely curated assortment of merchandise, drawing inspiration from a whimsical, nostalgic aesthetic and mixing it with a modern, downtown feel. Bicyclette believes in the beauty of juxtaposition and unexpected pairings: street style meets fairy tale.”
And that, ladies and gents, is why I didn’t think twice about hanging a glittery bike from the ceiling and putting a swing in the corner. It’s just so Bicyclette.
When I was at school for Fashion Communication at Ryerson, one of the mandatory classes we were required to take every year was a fashion illustration class, and it was one of the classes I always dreaded. I wasn’t very good, being more of a technical designer and finding it hard to take a more freehanded approach to illustration and find my personal style. That being said, I’ve always loved fashion illustration, and find myself drawn to artists that capture that whimsical style and are able to tell a story through their work. My fellow Ryerson grad and good friend Alex Perlin is one such designer, and I’ve loved watching her style evolve over the past few years and am constantly impressed by her talent and skill. Which is one of the reasons why I’m so excited to announce that we’re now carrying Alex’s Fashion Holiday Cards and Agendas at the shop! We’re all about supporting local talent this Holiday season, and Alex’s pieces are the perfect way to finish off any gift.
Alex recently started using Instagram to share her process work with her followers and, much to our excitement, has begun adding a sprinkle of glitter to a selection of her Holiday cards. Being that these are two of our recent obsessions at Bicyclette, we thought we’d share a little peek at some of her work before we post the actual products that are now for sale. Think of it as a glittery pre-introduction.

Last Thursday evening, Emily and I ordered a pizza, opened a bottle of red, turned up the Christmas music and put up our Holiday decorations at the shop. With 3 days of crafting already done, the process was relatively painless, and it was fun to give the shop a makeover infused with fairy lights, bright colours, sparkle, and lots of DIY’d projects based on our inspiration board. With this being our first (permanent) Christmas, we’re pretty excited to dive into the season and experience our first of many.
As is the custom, I wanted to share some photos that were taken that night and give you a little peek into the shop right now. You can expect many more photos over the next while as we continue to add to displays and play with the various elements. Next up? The window, tomorrow!
With Christmas a mere two months away, last night we gathered the dream team (Sian, Sarah, Emily, Danielle, Keri, Lauren and Christian), and began to shoot our Holiday Gift Guide. It’s our first time working on this kind of project, and we’re pretty excited to launch it. Here’s a few behind the scenes peeks. There were many glittery dresses, sparkling statement jewellery, and an overall celebratory atmosphere.
Since we’re receiving a lot of new Fall stock right now and the past month or so has been pretty slow with the outfit posts, I figure it’s only fair that I keep the outfit posts coming.
Today we received Eryn Brinie and I had to restrain myself from letting out a squeal when it arrived. Buying for the shop is one of my favourite aspects of the job, but it’s also the hardest. Not only are you buying for over 6 months in the future, but there’s also a tendency to fall in love with items only to have to wait until you’re able to lay eyes on them again, let alone wear them. The ivory sweater below is one such piece, and in many ways it exemplifies what Bicyclette stands for. It’s essentially a simple sweater, in a gorgeous ivory hue with a simple silhouette, but the beauty is in the detail: the feminine tulle hemmed camisole that comes layered under the sweater. Not only does it add that essential je ne said quoi to the piece, but because it is separate from the sweater itself, it lends itself to a world of layering possibilities with other items. And that’s what I call true love.

Layered "basics" with hints of turquoise and lilac and a sprinkling of glitter

Our coveted Kara Ross midnight sequin clutch, Tocca 'Colette' and Butter London

'Henley Regatta' and 'No More Waity, Katie'

The lilac hued scent, with hints of vanilla, sandalwood, musk and incense

Our window got a makeover yesterday, with a bit of a mismatched theme of back to school meets early Fall meets glitter girl fantasy. Complete with gold glittered apples, handwritten notes in hot pink sharpie, stacks of old books, and of course a selection of our new Fall merchandise. Pretty sure there’s no better way to usher in a new season …
